3D glasses together with 3D images, or Anaglyphs

By: Joe Healy

Films released as 3D in theaters will also provide a 3D experience on DVD and Blu-Ray with 3D glasses. The first Blu-ray 3D disk will be the Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert released by Disney studios in August 2008. In July 2008, this was shown on the Disney Channel with red-cyan paper 3D glasses.
In all probability it will use similar 3D glasses in the blu-ray release. With the learning curve at Disney and the improved definition from blu-ray, improvements can be seeen in the red-cyan anaglyph 3D glasses, particularily in the close overlay of the 3D pictures. Most Disney theatrical 3D images show far less mal-registration, compared to old fashioned polarized or anaglyph technique.

What makes 3D Anaglyph Glasses trick your brain into seeing in 3D?

3D glasses with the correct coloring cause anaglyphs to display a slightly altered image to each eye. An example is the red-blue anaglyph 3D glasses, the red filtered lens makes the red parts of the image appear as "white", while the blue parts are seen as "black". (Here the brain assists with the disparate images one's eyes are given by adjusting for color); whereas the total opposite phenomenon is observed by the eye masked by the blue-tinted filter. Each eye perceives true black or true white areas the same way. The brain blends together the image it receives from each eye, and interprets the differences as being the result of different distances. A normal stereograph image is created without the viewer having to cross their eyes.
