4 Reasons to Consider When Selecting a Water Filtration System

By: Larry L. Taylor

Selecting the best water filtration system is a challenge. Here are 4reasons you should consider when making your decision:

*How safe is your tap water?
*How much lead is in the water?
*Is chlorine treatment a good idea?
*Do You Have Parasites in Your Drinking Water?

First How Safe is Your Tap Water?

You might think that the water filtration system used by your local government makes your tap water safe for consumption. The truth is, it's not even safe to take a shower in. But you might think that the Federal law requires that any public water filtration system test the water regularly and publish their findings. That is ture. Based on that you might think you are safe because the report says you are.

The problem is that cities around the country are making deceptive or even false reports. They are changing the numbers and/or have failed to mention some of the more possible dangerous contaminants.

When contacted, utility company authorities have made statements like, "The general public would not understand the relevance of these findings." Most of us take that as an insult. According to the Washington Post, 65 of the 3000 largest public water filtration system facilities in the country are "manipulating the results of tests used to detect lead in water."

Lead in Your Tap Water?

You may know that lead is a toxic (posionous) metal. Lead-based paints have been banned for many years. But lead still is present in older dwellings. Lead poisoning causes learning disabilities, brain damage and if the toxicity level is high enough, it can even cause death.

A water filtration system that takes lead out of the water is the best way to protect your family. The problem may not be with the treatment facility. It may be in the pipes that bring the water to your home.

It may be a good idea to have your water tested by an independent laboratory. But it would be a very smart decision to invest in a good water filtration system even if your water test proves to be safe. Why? Water quality can change and a good water filter system is not that expensive, not to mention the peace of mind.

Is Chlorine Treatment a Good Idea?

According to the US Council of Environmental Quality, there is an increased risk of cancer in people who drink chlorinated water, as much as 93% higher. If you live anywhere in the United States, your water most likely has been chlorinated.

Treatment facilities use chlorine to "disinfect" the water and protect their systems from rot and algae growth. It's not the only way to disinfect the water. It's not the best way, either. But, it is the cheapest.

An inexpensive water filtration system will remove chlorine and it's odor by running it through activated carbon. Carefully compare systems. Some systems remove more chlorine than others. The best in-home water filtration system is designed to remove a number of other contaminants, also.

Parasites? In the Water?

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, 45 million of us drink water that is contaminated with the potentially deadly parasite known as cryptosporidium. Government officials say that no matter what kind of water filtration system your local facility uses, they cannot guarantee the absence of this parasite. This parasite is resistant to chlorine, which means it can pass right through the system and into your drinking water.

To remove cryptosporidium from the water, an water filtration system must use the latest technology. Your local facility will not go to the expense, but the technology is reasonably priced for home units. Do yourself and your family a favor, protect them with the best water filtration system and install it today.
