The Intermountain west is made up of the states Mo.,Id.,Wy.,Co.,Nv.,Ut. Although all of these states are known for for their incredible beauty there are many aspects of this area that most people do not often explore but are certainly worthy of attention. If you have the desire and ability then visit these on your next trip..

1. Visit the Hot Pools- This geographic area has a large amount of thermal activity which has resulted in a a good number of bathing hot pools in these states. These pools vary greatly in how much they have been developed and there is a spring to fit all types of persuasions. For those that prefer the rustic then White Sulfur Springs Hotel has the best pool and hotel for you. Those that like more of a spa feel, check out some of the ones that Colorado has to offer.

2. Search for Pictographs- The ancient peoples of the Intermountain west were extremely expressive, and a a lot of there 4000-year old art can still be seen today, painted on rocks across the area. For a quick tour, Fremont State Park in Utah has a interesting trail and museum, for those that enjoy walking Grand Gulch in Utah is a delightful place to spend time at.

3. Enjoy the Lesser Known National Recreation Areas- If you have not been to Glacier, then by all means you should go there first, but for those of you that have already done the main circuit of parks in the west you should think about visiting the less famous ones. Cumulatively, this region has over 53 National sites, and most of these states have exemplarylocal park systems as well.

4. Check Out the Regional Museums (as well as the most popular ones)- A lot of the best museums are those that are off the beaten track, like the small museum in Three Forks, Montana in which the local citizenry gathered paraphernalia from their area spanning a century and a half. Of course, some of the bigger museums are worth making a special trip for as well, such as the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody just outside Yellowstone Park. This museum has five separate galleries which cover some aspect of the west such as Old Guns of the West or Modern Western Art.

5. Go Skiing- Everyone knows that summer time activities abound in the Intermountain West, but we also have some of the best powder around. For those of you that are not interested in trying snowboarding, you should consider x-country skiing. Sun Valley, Idaho has groomed trails another great option the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest in Montana.

6. Visit anAlpine Lake during the summer – The mountains of the west are full of beautiful alpine lakes. A great many of these are well known but a few of the most beautiful are off the primary route of most travelers and sometimes require a difficult trek to reach. One of our favorite picks is Lost Lake in the Wind Rivers. This secluded alpine lake is surrounded by serated ridges and jagged mountain peaks that were created by glacier ice. The Wind River mountains are reknow for backpacking and camping opportunities. Another spectacular lake in the this same mountain range is Lonsome lake located near the Cirque of the Towers in the southern section of the Wind Rivers.

As you can tell, there are a wide variety of things that you can do in the mountain west, beyond the tired car tour. Any of the above ideas will not only be a great change of pace but will provide you with many great pictures for years to come.
