A Pink Floyd Primer

By: Cameron Morrison

Pink Floyd fans are unlike any other. They possess a devotion and passion that is carried with them wherever they go. The unique psychedelic styling of the English rock band has lent itself to such to such fascination over their almost 40 year history.

“Another Brick in the Wall, Part II” This is the song most famous for the lyrics “We don’t need no education.” Released in 1979 from the album The Wall, it hit #1 on multiple charts around the world, easily the most successful song in the history of the British rockers.

“Comfortably Numb” Another hit from The Wall, the song is only one of two songs on the album which is freestanding, meaning it does not fade in or fade out to other songs on the album. It’s one of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

“Learning to Fly” A hit from the 1987 album, A Momentary Lapse of Reason, the video for the song was filmed in Canada, which garnered the band its only MTV Video Music Award.

“Keep Talking” Using the talk-box effect and sampling Stephen Hawking vocals from a BT commercial, the first single released from 1994’s The Division Bell album was the last #1 song for the band to date.

While speculation about the band’s future remains uncertain, there is no news about a new tour or album. Thankfully, the music will live on through Pink Floyd downloads as well as through the fans and their memories.
