A Word of Caution When Doing Business Online

By: Gen Wright

Online businesses can be very lucrative. If you are the proud owner of an online business, you stand to acquire customers from all over the world and profit handsomely. However, online businesses are not without risks, especially if you are dealing with physical products. These risks are not new, and even experienced businessmen fall prey to such risks. Here is a quick example.

A company in Turkey placed an order with Rattanland, a company in Indonesia offering Rattan furniture at wholesale prices. The order was for 10 containers of furniture (that's a huge order). On the front, everything looked legitimate. There is a company website (still online), and whoever is at the other end responded.

An initial deposit was paid, and the order was confirmed. All 10 containers were sent, and the balance of USD18,000 was to be paid upon delivery. Unfortunately, after the shipment was sent, payment was not received.

"It has been 8 months since the delivery of the 10 containers, and not a single cent was received from the Turkish company," complained the owner of Rattanland. Obviously, there are some lessons to be learned here.

The issue of credibility.

When taking and filling orders taken on the Internet, the problem is that there is no face to face interaction. It's hard to tell who you are dealing with at the other end. The problem is compounded when you are dealing with someone from a country such as Turkey. If the contact person goes missing in action, it is almost impossible to track the person down. This makes it very hard to address any grievances.

Be sure to check out the credibility of the party you are dealing with. Even when you have received the deposit, that doesn't mean that the deal is perfectly legitimate.

Beware of unusually large orders.

Large orders are great. They usually give a handsome profit margin. But if something goes wrong, the business owner also tend to lose the most money. That's why due diligence is of utmost importance for orders that are unusually large.

Countries selection.

It is always wise to choose to do business with customers and suppliers who reside in countries with a favorable business infrastructure. A favorable business infrastructure means having a stable political system, as well as having an efficient and effective court of law. Law enforcement is crucial here because in the event of dispute, problems can be settled quickly.

In the online world, reputation is everything. Without a credible reputation, any deals can be at risk of going awry. When that happens, money is lost. And sometimes, even with a great deal of time and energy, the money can never be recouped again. Therefore, always take precautions and choose your contacts carefully. Avoid doing business with suspicious companies like Ratexbambu.
