A "rough" guide to bars in Murcia. Going out in Murcia is a learning experience if you're English. Whilst you can still go out the old fashioned English way (Go out at 7.00p.m. and be home in bed at 1.00a.m. ready for some kip) it's more interesting to try to be 'continental' in Murcia. Most places in Murcia don't show their true character until around 1.00a.m. so you'll miss out on most of the amosphere if that's the way you choose to go. Here's a tip: To do justice to your night in Murcia adjust your body timer to a Murcian night out by altering your watch by an hour. Don't even think of going to a "real" Murcia bar before 10.00pm. Before that, if you want to be out and about why not have a coffee in Plaza Cardenal Belluga (Cathedral Square) and admire the floodlit Cathedral. from there. You could then amble down to the Hotel Rincon de pepe (Apostoles, 34) for a cocktail in the "La Muralla" bar, one of the few places in Murcia where you can see Murcia's original Arab Walls. Here 's a list of some of the bars in Murcia. El Albergue (19 Calle Vara de Rey.) Stays open until 3, serves cocktails and has real music on Tuesdays. Youngersters love it and it really bounces at weekends. El Bolo (29 Calle Vara del Rey.) Well chilled bar in the Old Town right in the party area. You can see live gigs on Tuesdays and also cocktail features on Fridays and Saturdays. A good bar to start the night, then return for a drink later chill out. Hermanos Rubio (3 Plaza Santa Isabel.) A traditional tapas bar not far from the cathedral in the heart of the Old Town. If you order a sherry here they'll think you're a local. Josepe (9 Arquitecto Emilio Piñero.) This is an excellent tapas bar that stays open all day. There are lots of nostalgic past paintings and photographs of Murcia City around the place. Try a pan con tomate and a sherry in the early evening for a change before your meal. This is usually one of the first bars in Murcia I call in.. Icaro (Plaza Beato A Hibermón.) Situated near Murcia University, in an area which is a lively student scene during term time. Again Icaro is a good place for an early evening drink. Guanábana Jam (6 Plaza Cerámica.) This is a newish night club with bars &stage mainly offering live jazz, blues and soul. On Tues & Wed it's open till 1.00, while Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays carry on later till 3 or so.. Itaca (7 Calle Mariano Vergara. Tel. 968 934 922) Near the Uni. This is one of the more unusual bars in Murcia in that it's both bar and a bookshop. You'll meet lots of local students having coffee during the day, then in the evening a more mature crowd come in to sample the cocktails. Mojitos is the most requested drink. La Bulla (Calle Montijo.) One of a few Cuban bars specialisiing in Cocktails. Stays open till 3am. Drexco (26 Trapería.) Cool café near the Cathedral for non alcoholic drinks and coffee. Probably the biggest choice of coffee in Murcia with beans from all over the planet. Open 'til 1.00am with chilled out music and atmosphere. B12 (17 Calle Trinidade.) A trendy bar but fairly quiet early on in the evening. Nice place to grab an early drink to start the evening. Mestizo (14 Doctor Fleming.) Chilled-out café during the day but in the evenings it becomes a lively bar. riotous atmosphere later as opposed to chilled out earlier.. Zanzibar (3 Calle Andres Baquero.) This is a small bustling small bar that serves just about every kind of drink you care to mention. Inside you'll find people relaxing with anything from a harvey wallbanger to a milkshake. Happy hour is on Wednesdays from 9-11pm where the old two for one applies. That just about covers it for article 1 on bars in Murcia City. There's a few to go at anyway.. Should you visit any other Murcia pubs that you think should be mentioned then email me and let me have the lowdown. Cheers!!
