With good reason St John's Wort is frequently thought of in terms of being a wonder herb as it is used remedially for various ailments. Chinese physicians have utilized St John's Wort for thousands of years. Much more recently has it come into its own in Western medicine as a treatment for moderate depression. Substantial numbers of people prefer St John's Wort as an alternative to Prozac. It appears that in Germany where St John's Wort is an approved treatment it is widely used in preference to Prozac. In the past it was considered that the hypericin contained in St John's Wort, accounted for its antidepressant effect. However, continuing studies are not fully supportive of this, and it is not known, specifically, why the herb works in treating depression. It is absolutely sure, that there are millions of people in many parts of the world, who are using St John's Wort and reaping benefits. Due to the herbs reputation, research studies are easily available, and authorative books have been marketed with relevant information. Experts continue with their work to discover the mystery of St John's Wort, but for its innumerable supporters how it works is not so important as the fact that it does. Moreover, it seems that though its medicinal uses are highly regarded for helping with depression, it is useful for several other afflictions. Herbalists have been using St John's Wort as treatment for the body from ancient times until the present day, using its anti-inflammatory and antibiotic effects. Preparations for internal use include infusions and tinctures, but capsules are often preferred. Creams, ointments, and oils are obtainable for external usage. Just because a substance is thought of as being natural, does not automatically indicate that it is good for you. If it is it may not be good universally. Fair skinned people, especially, should be aware that St John's Wort may react with sunshine, to affect eye and skin complications. It has been reported that St John's Wort in common with some other substances can change the effect of prescribed and freely available medication. Therefore, should you be taking other medicines, or have any concerns whatever about St John's Wort, visit your physician for guidance.
