Advice For Riding With A Baby On Board

By: Mike Clarkson

When you strap a baby onto your bike there are some safety concerns that you want to be sure and address, besides the obvious like everyone should wear a helmet.
When you attach a seat on your bike, you have some issues that need to be checked off before you and your baby set off into the sunset.

It is important to realize that the extra weight of a baby on your bike will alter where the center of gravity is. It’s important that you have a high quality, strong bike with a sound frame, at the very least; to insure both you and your baby will be safe.

Jennifer Jansen is the examiner for a respected bicycle NGO working to help make sure that bikers remain safe and sound and remember some basic safety guidelines.

“You should make sure that you are a strong rider as the centre of gravity is higher and how your bike handles and responds will alter,” said Jennifer Jansen.
“Ensure that when you get going, that you are paying attention, don’t reach around to grab something or get out something, that is often when the bike will tip over and can be dangerous,” said Jennifer Jansen.

Select the ride that you take carefully, and try to stay off busy arterials as often they have a lot of confusion that make cycling with a baby on board difficult and hazardous. “If you can take quieter side routes it is likely the best thing for you and for your baby,” said Jennifer Jansen.
