Are You Getting Enough Omega 3 Fatty Acids In Your Diet?

By: Michael Byrd

Omega 3 fish oil is in the news over and over again with scientists touting its lifetime of health benefits.

What will fish oil do for you?

The benefits of fish oil begin with conception and end up with a reduction in Alzheimers. The benefits also include higher intelligence levels, fewer migraines and other headaches, reduced incidence and pain from arthritis, heart disease protection, less incidence of depression and bipolar, and even protection from breast cancer and prostate cancer.

Let's go all the way back to the beginning. In order for healthy conception to occur, both male and female need to have the right amounts of the omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA in their bodies. In a man's body, the omega 3 fatty acids are responsible for strong sperm, while in a woman's body, they're vital for healthy egg production.

Once conception has taken place, the developing baby's brain relies heavily on the omega 3 fatty acids for optimal development. Fish has traditionally been known as brain food. What's interesting is that recently research has shown that nearly 70% of a baby’s brain and more than 60% of an adult brain is made up of the long chain omega 3 fatty acids like DHA that come from fish.

This information is so important that the highly respected National Institutes of Health has issued a recommendation of 1200 mg of fish oil for pregnant and nursing women.

The National Institutes of Health also issued a recommendation for every adult to consume or supplement at least 1000 mg of fish oil daily. Let's look at the reason for this recommendation.

Clinical trials have revealed that fish oil with EPA and DHA is extremely effective in preventing, reducing and treating inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, bursitis, cystitis and other painful disorders.

It looks like omega 3 fish oil is your drug free, side effect free answer to natural pain relief and disease prevention.

The omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA have also been shown to lower blood pressure, decrease your bad cholesterol and increase your good cholesterol and help prevent heart disease.

And, as if all of the above fish oil benefits were not enough, new research is pointing towards positive results in the areas of Alzheimer's disease and cancer.

Now you can see that the health results of supplementing your diet with omega 3 fatty acids are exceedingly positive. But a recent study showed that eighty-five percent of Americans are deficient in omega 3 fatty acids.

Here's another scary statistic. Nearly 1/5 of the American population is so low in DHA and EPA that test methods are not able to detect any omega 3s in their blood.

Are you and your family deficient? Here's what you need to do. Get started eating more fatty fish (like salmon, tuna, herring, sardines and anchovies). You should also start taking a high quality, pure fish oil supplement on a daily basis.
