Are You Losing The Internet Speed Race?

Think your internet is running as fast as it should be? Are you paying for 5 meg service and think you might only be receiving 3? Internet speed tests are a quick and easy way to determine if your getting what you paid for.

You can check the homepage of your cable company or do a Google search and find hundreds of speed tests out there. Trying different ones at different times of the day will help you get a good idea of your actual speed.

A good test site that I recommend is the one at the PCnineoneone website. While Im sure its fairly comparable to other sites with speed tests, I just enjoy watching the race car dashboard interface while the test is running.

If your internet has slowed down greatly, it could mean there is a problem somewhere. Performing a few speed tests will help you determine where you might want to start looking for a problem. If the test show low speeds then contacting your internet provider might be a good start after you have checked your modem. If the speeds are OK then you need to start looking within your system for a problem.

Determining where the trouble starts will help you figure out where to start troubleshooting first. Most cable companies today offer free tech support for their customers.

Once you determine that the trouble is on your end go ahead and start with a reboot of your modem. Just unplug it for about 30 seconds and plug it back in. This will restart the modem and the connection to the internet provider. Most of the time this will be all you will need to do to get your turbo internet speeds back up to par. If this does not fix the problem, the next thing I would recommend would be to find a good spyware scanning software and perform a thorough system scan. I've always had great results with the AdAware program.
