Are You Thinking Of Using A Credit Card This Christmas?

By: Alisdair Cosgrove

For many years now a great many of us have relied on credit cards in order to get us through the expense of Christmas and the New Year, with many enjoying the ease, convenience, and flexibility of credit cards for their Christmas shop. As many of us already know the days of easy and cheap credit are over and this means that when it comes to using credit cards many consumers could face difficulties this coming Christmas.

If you have come to depend on your credit card over the festive season then you are not alone, as many people like to put the expense of this period on to the plastic. With so many different costs to cope with, such as presents, food, entertainment, clothes, and socialising, many need to flexibility that credit cards offer in order to cope financially at this time of the year. This year many people could be in for a shock, as using their credit cards to pay for Christmas may turn out to be not so easy and not so affordable.

Over the past twelve months both the credit card sector and other financial sectors have been suffering problems as a result of the ongoing global credit crunch.Because of these problems the cost of borrowing on credit cards has risen, and the availability of affordable credit cards has reduced, causing a lot of potential problems for consumers.

If you have pretty bad credit and apply for a credit card in the run up to Christmas, there is a good chance that you will be turned down because of the tighter credit conditions that are in place, and this is something that you should prepare yourself for.The fact that many lenders have taken a range of their credit card deals off the market means that even if you are able to get a card you may not enjoy the same choice as you did previously.

If a lender refuses you a credit card this Christmas you must ensure that you do not start submitting applications elsewhere, as each time you are rejected your chances of success get slimmer, and this could impact greatly on your finances. After you have been rejected for a credit card you need to wait at least three months before you apply again, as otherwise you will further damage your credit.

Those that are able to get a credit card this Christmas should not be surprised to see that interest rates and charges have gone up in many cases, with lenders having hiked up fees and rates on cards over recent months.A number of credit cards have increased their interest rates even though the base rate in the UK has plummeted over recent months, which the Prime Minister has even spoken out about.

For those looking to get a credit card in time for Christmas you should ensure that you get your application in as early as possible, and this is due to the longer processing time at Christmastime.
