There are several things you will want to teach your new dog as soon you bring him home. The most important lesson will be where he should "do his business". Relax. It can be fairly easy. If you know what you are doing, and are firm with your dog, you can teach him in just three easy steps. Before anything else you need to do is decide where you want him to "go". Choose a place. A private location at the back our your garden would be ideal. Somewhere private and out of sight at the end of your lawn, could work. Under a bush or a tree on the edge of your lot. There will be a number of, so choose one. This will be his toilet zone. Know this and be consistent about it. Now watch your pup after meals. You will notice that he makes distinctive movements when he feels the urge to eliminate waste. Perhaps he will stop still. He may look at you intently. Often a puppy in this situation will strain his body. There will be signs that he is about to do his business. When you see these signs quickly pick him up and hurry out to that place you have chosen. Something you should do -- each time you carry him out, take him out by the same way. "go" with leaving your home -- and certainly from your living room carpet! Gently and without rush place your dog down in the toilet place but don't leave him: him unattended - instead wait until he starts to "go" and right then say a special word of command. Quickly he will link your command with his eliminating and in time will only "go" when you use your word. Put some thought in before you choose this word. It should be a word other people won't laugh at. Your dog will be out with you on occasion and want to "use the toilet". If your word will bring an embarrassed smile to those around you , you will wish you'd chosen more wisely. Finally, when he has finished, reward him. Some people use food. Others use a clicker. Whatever you do, give your dog something that says, "Well done! You are a good dog!" I realize this is almost too good to be true, but your dog is going to learn exactly what he should do at "potty time" if you put this simple three-step program into action.
