Backyard Dangers - Why Your Dog's Life May Be In Danger

By: Dr. John Chan

About a year ago, my friends' 4 puppies were poisoned by their neighbors who threw in some meat soaked with rat poison and all of the puppies died some very painful death. Have you ever thought of dangers as such that can take away your dog's life any time?

Since most puppies have to go through that oral fixation phase where he must chew on anything he can find, it'd be very dangerous for him to bite into something that is poisonous by nature. The scene of your dog being poisoned and hearing him scream with pain isn't something funny to be taken lightly.

They will never forget having seen such painful scene of life quickly replaced by death just because of some heartless souls who were not fond of dogs and would do whatever it took to get rid of them in this uncivilized manner. Now they'd never leave their dogs unattended at the backyard even though they now have built solid cover that shields and fences the area.

But is it absolutely safe now that all these physical measures have been taken? Of course, your backyard is a puppy's heaven because such a young and adventurous new life will definitely enjoy running free within this homely environment.

Let's not forget that, puppies, between the age of 1 and 6 months, are still going through what is called oral fixation phase in which they'd just chew on anything in sight. Some other types of dogs, such as Golden retrievers, seem to carry this chewing habit with them for the rest of their lives.

Sometimes, some smaller animals or even insects that carry with them - as designed by Nature - some poisonous substances that can cause harm to the puppies too if the puppies catch them and play around with them. This makes the backyard quite a dangerous place to leave the young dogs there all by themselves.

It's so urgently important to keep things tidy that attention must be carefully given to ensure all things are well covered and put back to the storage area in good order after use so that no unwanted visitors will be invited such as mice, snake, cockroach, etc. Chemicals as well as pesticide and fertilizers must be stored tightly in their own containers just in case the playful little puppies would choose to chew on them.

If all the precautions have been well carried out properly, your puppies are sure to have a very healthy and happy life without any unnecessary dangers that, at times, will cause their lives. Making sure about this will also make you a happy pet owner as well.
