The Bamboo uses have been a unique and valuable asset in many cultures. Many societies have needed this for hundreds of years, and some even thousands. Bamboo has been used to produce food (new bamboo stems), lumber (poles) and fodder (leaves) as a building material made from the bamboo plant. In Asia, the uses for bamboo range from the manufacture of fine writing paper to the crafting of sturdy scaffolding for building skyscrapers, due to the bamboo strength. In regions of the world where large-sized bamboo varieties occur naturally, thick-walled poles are used to construct houses and are the raw material used in the manufacture of paper and laminated flooring. For weaving bamboo area rugs and mats for use on the floors, walls and ceilings, as well as for use in forming pressed mat board, the thinner-walled species are needed. People in Costa Rica and nearby countries use bamboo to make house walls, after cutting it into lath. A group of bamboo trees can protect soil from eroding because the rhizomes and roots interweave. Bamboo groves provide a habitat for wildlife, and some animals like the Giant Panda depend partially or completely on bamboo for food and habitat. Bamboo can grow quickly if it is well managed. It is a long-term perennial crop when harvested in a sustainable fashion. Good management including proper harvesting is the key to bamboo's potential to contribute to sustainable development worldwide. The multiple uses of bamboo as a food and fiber source have attracted enthusiasts, experts, and researchers throughout history. New people are attracted to this versatile crop because of bamboo uses potential to fill so many needs.
