Wonderful, marvelous, fantastic are all words that have been used to explain the therapeutic benefits that aromatherapy can provide. Even though there has been a little ambiguity, concerning it, aromatherapy is a name that is not difficult to comprehend. All it means is the use of aromas, or scents to use another word, for treatment of a range of ailments. That is not to suggest that you require to be ill to seek the benefits of aromatherapy, because it is a treat that you can simply use to promote relaxation and harmony. Aromatherapy is concerned with the use of aromatic essential oils, to assist in keeping us healthy in our minds and bodies. Essential oils are extracted from plants and include fruits, leaves, flowers, stalks, barks, and roots. People are becoming increasingly conscious of the advantages of a natural health existence, and what could be as natural as taking a good measure of nature, through the use of aromatherapy and its essential oils? A wide variety of essential oils have specific properties. Relying upon the plant source from which they were obtained they may be anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial, or anti-viral, or a combination of any of these. The essential oils may be utilized as tonics or sedatives, to induce relaxation or enhance a particular state of mind. This is where aromatherapy fits in well, through the application of its essential oils. As they are extracted from plant parts they could just as well be called natural oils as they are precious resources of our wonderful planet. If you have ever walked through a pine forest you appreciate that the aroma from the trees is exceedingly invigorating. From such a delightful holiday recollection, you may think how splendid it would have been, if you could have packaged that wondrous aroma and took it back home! You can do that, because that's what aromatherapy allows you to do. Gather nature so you can take it home, put a drop or two in your bath, sit back, and recreate a holiday in the solitude of your own home. Taking advantage of aromatherapy in this way is extremely effective, as you receive treatment from breathing in the aromas, and through the skin. The chief objective of aromatherapy essential oils is our sense of smell. If aromatherapy essential oils are inhaled, the odour stimulates the cells in our olfactory nerves, resulting in an impulse which is sent to the emotional area of the brain, called the “limbic system.” The limbic system is associated with other parts of the brain, responsible for breathing, blood circulation, and memory, and is associated with the endocrine glands, which control hormone levels in our body.
