Just a few years ago UK bingo was a game played mainly by women over 50 in bingo clubs throughout the United Kingdom. During the last few years or so there has been a drastic change that I’m sure many could have not expected. Bingo has become sexy! That’s right, bingo has been transformed from a game that most thought was only played by the “blue rinse” brigade in to a game that is now played by sexy celebs. People who now play bingo come from many different walks of life and have a wide age range. Celebrities like Denise Van Outen, Elle MacPherson, Atomic Kitten, Damon Hill, Bianca and Jade Jagger to the average 18 to 25 years old of either sex. The game is enjoyed throughout the United Kingdom by a vast diverse mix of people. Bingo no longer has an aged image. Bingo has also evolved from smokey bingo halls to now being played in homes throughout the world with the rapid growth of online bingo. Clever marketing and endorsement by celebs have transformed the game into the fastest form of gambling in the UK. Marketing of bingo is so strong that most daytime UK TV shows are either sponsored by bingo sites or are fighting for advertising space during the breaks. During the latter part of 2008 there was even a dedicated bingo show that was broadcast most nights on mainstream UK TV which offered the chance for anybody to play bingo for free. Bingo Night Live was a huge success and rumours suggest that a second series will be broadcast during late 2009. The rise of online bingo and indeed its popularity though has damaged the live bingo scene with many bingo halls closing throughout the UK. Many blame the smoking ban for the closures but as playing online is much cheaper and in most cases offer big prizes it’s a “no brainer” to realise that online bingo is the real reason. Online bingo can be played 24 hours a day for as little as a penny and you only need to make a few clicks on your computer to get your fix. The social side of online bingo has also played a large part in its growth. All online bingo sites has chat rooms and these to some degree have replaced the social side of bingo as you no longer need to go to a bingo hall to chat with your friends. So it looks like bingo is here to stay and the demise of bingo halls will continue well into 2009 and beyond. Who would have thought bingo would become so popular? Not I?
