Bonsai - A Brief Overview|

By: Simon Hurst

Bonsai is derived from bon and sai mean to plant in a tray or a pot in Japanese. Bonsai as the name implies is creating artistic designs using potted plants. Bonsai is in excess of ten centuries old and began in China. Buddhist monks introduced the art form of bonsai to Japan, caring for these dwarfed plants and trees with the greatest of care. The Japanese then took bonsai and crafted and improved it as an artistic pursuit.Bonsai is the development of wonderful and elegant tiny trees over long timeframes.

Although not always clear nowadays the bonsai was developed as an outdoor plant. However since the 1990s it is becoming more and more as a piece of indoor decor.

Bonsai is never stagnant as the plant is alive and the artist can be always improving its form. Bonsai will also be subject to change as summer moves through to winter and vice versa. A large number of gardens in Japan incorporate bonsai to add to the beauty and to distinguish them. At its finest bonsai is a perfect amalgamation of artistic and gardening excellence.

Trees that grow all around in differing heights and designs are what bonsai should recreate except in miniature. In fact bonsai can be produced from just about all shrubs or trees. Although some are more equal than others with respect to suitability for bonsai. This is because they have characteristics that make them appropriate for the smaller design arrangements of bonsai. Maples, junipers, elms and hawthorns are good examples of trees selected for any bonsai that is to be situated outside.

Bonsai trees require regular watering, feeding and repotting to keep them in optimum health and in many cases they are actually healthier that their counterparts in the wild, enjoying the same longevity. Repotting is necessary after about three years because there is only sufficient feed in the soil to last your tree that amount of time. Bonsai soil is a mix of ingredients, say gravel or shale and some organic matter, to give feed and fast draining qualities. You need to check regularly for any infestation or diseases. Various weather conditions lead to the bonsai tree becoming very dry, so it is necessary for you to check the soil for moisture and water as required. One problem is many bonsai do not appear distressed when there is insufficient water for their good health. In fact they may even appear green and healthy despite having an entirely dead root system.

Bonsai wiring is one of the most powerful tools to control the shape of the tree. To keep the bonsai as a miniature it is necessary to limit its possible growing habitat. Each twig of the bonsai may require to be shaped to achieve the wanted overall effect.
