Can Alternative Energy Sources Save The Planet?

The generation of energy sources beyond those derived from fossil fuels has attracted increasing attention and gone more mainstream in recent years. This is not a geocentric phenomenon, instead it is a much bigger and wide spread spectrum. What is causing this major shift?
One reason is the need for energy sources that are renewable and won’t eventually run out at some future date.
Currently around the world the consumption of fossil fuels is 100,000 times faster than their natural production. According to an estimate the demand for these fuels will suddenly outstrip their availability in a matter of centuries-or less.
A more urgent reason affecting our current generation is the effect of fossil fuel emissions on the environment.

These are the big picture factors that have to be considered when assessing the value, benefit and effectiveness of alternative energy sources.
