Causes of Insomnia. Signs to Look For

By: Carl Spencer

Millions of people suffer from insomnia. It is a common disease that has been around for ages. However, this doesn't make it any easier to deal with, especially since doctors are just beginning to understand this disease. The most important detail in treating this condition is learning the causes of insomnia.

The best way to begin treatment is by figuring out the causes of insomnia. This sounds simple, right? It is not as easy as it might sound, but learning what you can about the risk factors and common causes of insomnia can help you learn how to deal with this type of disorder.

Certain Risk Factors Can Increase the Causes of Insomnia

Certain risk factors can make you more susceptible to having insomnia than others. People at higher risk are people that suffer from depression along with elderly people. Females are also at higher risk than males. When you combine these factors with medical conditions, stress and anxiety, then the causes of insomnia become greater for that person than for someone without these risk factors. Certain medications can also increase your risk factors of getting this sleep disorder.

Different Causes of Insomnia Last for Different Lengths of Time

Insomnia is classified according to how long you have suffered from this condition. There are three major types of insomnia. The type that last for a short time and then goes away is called transient insomnia. If it goes away and comes back off and on, then it is called intermittent insomnia.

These causes of insomnia are usually caused by some underlying disorder that relates to your physical, mental or emotional state which makes them harder to pinpoint.

There are a few disorders that can cause chronic insomnia. Some of these are Kidney disease, asthma, restless leg syndrome, sleep apnea, Parkinson's disease, narcolepsy, arthritis, hyperthyroidism, heart conditions and depression.

Sometimes chronic insomnia is caused by factors that you create yourself. For instance, if you abuse alcohol, caffeine or have a problem with substance abuse you may have this condition as a result. Cigarette smoking, napping during the day and anxiety caused from lack of sleep are also causes of insomnia.

Finding the Source of the Problem

Confronting the source of the problem is the best way to determine which treatment would suit your needs the best. Sometimes treatment can be as simple as removing the factors that are causing the condition. However, other times it is not this easy. This is why it is so important to find the causes of insomnia that are keeping you up at night.

You Can Get Help

If you can't locate the causes of your insomnia do not worry, help is available. You are not expected to do it all on your own. You can talk with your health care provider and work together to determine the causes of your insomnia.
