Choosing The Best Carpet Cleaning Tip

By: Nikki Rowd

Where cleaning carpets is concerned, there has to be hundreds of remedies and ways to get rid of odors, stains, grease, shading, carpet stitch damage, dirt and what have you. There are also several known tips that housewives and professional cleaners have come up with in order to replace those "when in doubt, use cleaning solution" remedies. Below are some of those tips and hopefully, from the list, you may be able to determine for yourself which ones work best.

Cleaning Carpet Stains

The most common problem for carpets are usually the everyday spills from kid's drinks, to coffee to something worse and more sticky such as honey or food sauces. The bad thing about spills is that they always leave marks on the carpet. The good thing about it is that it can be cleaned up. All you have to do is keep the spill from settling into the carpet. The best thing to do is to immediately wipe up the spill by damping it with a dry sponge or wool.

If you need to use carpet soap on the spill, clean and wash the carpet with water first before applying the detergent on the spill. Another important carpet cleaning tip you need to keep in mind is to dilute cleaning liquids such as vinegar, rubbing alcohol, ammonia in water if you use these to clean carpet spills and stains as these may only ruin and damage the texture and color when used directly.

Odors on Carpets

Spills and stains can not only ruin carpets, it can also develop bad smells and odor which could be hard to remove. Carpets that have long been kept in cool and damp places and have not been aired out for some time can also develop foul odor.

In order to remove the old stale odor from carpets, wash your carpet in mild scented detergent or soap and conditioner and dry it under the heat of the sun. However, always be careful to thoroughly dry the carpet as dampness in the material will only add to the odor. Freshening sprays are also good ways to get rid of the smell.

Carpet Dents

Carpets can also acquire dents from heavy furniture. Most likely, you will notice some dents and flattened areas on your carpet where a couch or your grandfather's clock used to be.

You may need to apply steam iron on those dented areas and brush up its fibers with tough bristles. Be careful, however, to keep the iron from touching the carpet when applying steam. You can also brush those dented areas until the carpet fibers are restored to its original condition and although this may take some time before it is restored, brushing your carpet dents with bristles is actually a good way to maintain your carpet's look. There are also carpet cleaning professionals and repair experts who will gladly do the repair for you for a certain price.
