Choosing the Perfect Baby Name: Tips for Success

By: Gen Wright

Wading through the huge list of possible baby names can be both exciting and exhausting. How do you determine which name is right for the little one you have yet to meet? How will you and your partner ever agree on a single name? And finally, when you get the name picked out, what happens if it is unsuitable for the baby after birth?

Luckily, there are factors to reflect upon that will significantly ease the process . Choosing a name for your child should be one of the most exciting parts of being pregnant, and the following suggestions assist you in the process.

#1 - Meaning

Think about the origin of the name you are considering and what it may mean to you or other people. Will this baby signify something to you or is she a miracle? Look through the meanings of the names you are considering to find something that communicates what he or she represents. Similarly, carefully consider the meanings of names. Finalizing a name only to find out that you picked "the clown" from all the baby boy's names available can be upsetting.

#2 - Impression

Strongly think about the impression of the name on you and others. Is it difficult to pronounce or articulate? Does it roll of the tongue naturally or does it sound forced? If you have a long family name, you probably should avoid a very long first name. Consider the way a particular first name goes with your surname. Sometimes baby names are beautiful in theory, but awkward in real life.

#3 - Memories

Does a particular personality inspire you? You should also consider what the name reminds you of. Does the name bear resemblance to the name of your ex-boyfriend? This could well make things a bit uncomfortable for you and your current boyfriend. Certain names should be avoided at all costs, I doubt anyone would be unhappy about not being able to name their daughter after their husband's ex-partner.

#4 - Religion

Often religion influences their choice of names. Some religions have criteria for picking baby names, thus if religion is important to you, you may want to examine what your religious scholars have to say about naming children.

#5 - Honor

Does your list of baby names include the name of a friend you are thinking about honoring ?

Naming a newborn baby girl after her grandmother is extremely special to all persons involved and can help the child develop closeness with her namesake as she grows older. Middle names are selected sometimes in order to honor others . Naming the baby after a family tradition is based on the same principle. For the child's sake, if you name him after his dad or her mother, find the baby a nickname to avoid the confusion of having two individuals with identical names living together.
