If you've been paying attention recently, you'll notice that the cowboy image and persona that we see depicted everywhere has undergone a little bit of change over the past few years. Sure, we still have the Marlboro Man-style depiction of the western apparel clad man on a horse, smoking his cigarette in the most manly and self confident of ways. However, we also have Brokeback Mountain, gay rodeos in San Jose and the recurring question of John Wayne's actual preferred lifestyle. Now, before you start making a correlation between western wear and any other lifestyle other than time spent on the ranch, remember that this is still a very small part of the population. The point here is that it takes all kinds, and the life of a cowboy depends on nothing so much as hard work and the desire to be out there doing it. Donning a pair of cowboy boots, however, has little to do with the ranch these days. You'll find western wear and boots on the feet of people all across the country. It shows up on the runway time and time again in the lines of different designers and in differing ways. You'll also find cowboy boots on the feet of little boys everywhere- the romantic lure of the wild wild west is not yet diminished nor tarnished by time. Kids still play cowboys and indians, and we continually see new western movies being made. The evolution of western wear, on the other hand, is not one influenced by style or culture as much as it is based on function and necessity. Jeans weren't just a good look, they were the only pants that could hold up through all those long hours on horseback. Cowboy boots happened as an outgrowth of the English riding boots that were being used at the time and weren't quite up to par for the hazards of the trail. Anyone can put on a pair of cowboy boots and look great- that is the magic that they have become. You can pair them with a business suit, a skirt, a dress, or a pair of jeans. If you truly want to have the full experience, however, you really ought to try riding in them and traversing rough terrain. Sure, you get to go home and shower at the end of it, but that's just the benefit of trying the experience, rather than living it. You'd be surprised at what sort of preconceived notions about that style of life you may find yourself dropping.
