Creating Keepsakes with Scrapbooking

By: Johnathan Sproles

Scrapbooking can be a fantastic way to preserve personal and family memories. Make an attractive and intriguing piece of family art and you can create something that can be passed on through generations, as well as being able to show off your creative side.
Scrapbooking is a way of getting your keepsakes in the right place. Perhaps you have a closet full of old photographs in shoeboxes that have been left ignored. Keep an open mind when looking around for items that would be suitable to work with!
Separate your pictures into whatever categories you plan to scrapbook by. Using these specific categories will allow you to enhance your scrapbooking themes. Some categories you might consider are family vacations, high school, your travels, sports events, the homecoming dance, or any other memory you would like to preserve. Select one idea to base your first scrapbook on and don't stray from it. This aids in keeping your scrapbook meaningful and cohesive.
Pick your theme, then choose the pictures that fit for each category. Your "best" photos are those which capture the mood you are looking for and these are not always the ones which are posed or those which are the most aesthetically attractive. It's okay if the photo is off-centered, fuzzy, or overexposed; errors can always be cropped out. These will be the photographs you use to fill your pages.
Don't forget that you can use other memorabilia, not just pictures, that go along with the theme you have chosen. Adding items such as ticket stubs, a playbill, or pressed flowers can make your scrapbook pages more decorative and meaningful.
Arranging the layout of your page is the next step. This is the part of scrapbooking that is the most rewarding although it is the hardest to do. Using your extensive imagination, let your creativity run wild! Make sure that your page layout is creative. You want each page of scrapbook to tell a story and be part of a cohesive idea. You can construct the background for your pages using scraps that you can make a collage from, pieces of felt or fabric, or any other alternative material. Your page can contain any items that you think will make your page look more interesting.
Place the photos on top of these interesting backgrounds to create something unique. Before you glue anything down, play with the layout to strike the balance on your pages that you find the most satisfactory. Obtaining the specific look that you want to achieve will require you to crop and cut photos, as well as make adjustments to the other mementos you plan to include. This step can be extremely tedious, but you don't want to hurry through it. In the end, it is the way the scrapbook looks that will make it stand out the most.
You probably will have to do a bit of research to get some ideas for layouts. Inspiration can be found in pre-made layout guides, but in the end you should choose a layout that you like.

Add your final touches. To your page, you can add text explaining your photographs, gems, glitter, buttons or anything else that may be interesting to others viewing your page.
The most important thing to remember when creating your scrapbook is that not only is your scrapbook a physical representation of your memory, it is the actual process that makes it worthwhile. If you put your heart and soul into scrapbooking you won't be able to help being happy with the final result. Happy scrapping!
