Exercise Your Eyes With Pinhole Glasses

By: Mike Lamb

Pinhole glasses are also known as Stenopeic glasses. "Stenopeic" is a Greek word meaning "little opening". These eyeglasses have a series of pinhole size perforations or tiny openings which allow lesser amount of light to enter the eyes. They are made up not of glass but of an opaque substance such as metal or plastic. Compared to conventional glasses, they are modern and affordable and also provide clearer vision. They prove to be very effective for exercising the eyes. They are ideal for elderly people and computer users.
The working of pinhole glasses is similar to a pinhole camera. In a weak eye, the light rays entering into the eyes do not focus on to the same place on the retina. Hence, a blurred image is formed. When pinhole glasses are used, rays which have same focus on retina, enter the eye and a clear image can be seen. Light enters through each perforation, increasing the depth of the field. Only what is directly in front of the retina is taken into vision. Refractive errors such as myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism, etc. are caused due to the improper bending of the outermost rays. Pinhole glasses diminish these errors in the lens or cornea by blocking the peripheral rays and only letting into the eye those rays which pass through the central portion of the pupil.
Pinhole glasses have many advantages over conventional glasses. Conventional glasses have to be upgraded as the user's vision changes. This is not the case with pinhole glasses. Moreover, they have a relaxing effect on the eye muscles because the rays entering into the eyes are already in focus and no effort is required from the eye muscle for accommodation. Conventional glasses weaken the eyes with the passage of time. But pinhole glasses are considered 100% safe and useful for people belonging to any age group--young or old. They improve vision clarity and resolution and increase object brightness. They provide improved image at all distances. They are lightweight, durable, attractive and affordable. Modern pinholes have solid, curved lenses of clear plastic which provide full ultraviolet protection. They provide a simple and inexpensive solution for reading or other close work in old age.
In spite of their benefits, pinhole glasses are not free from limitations. Firstly, blocking of some light diminishes the intensity of light. Secondly, peripheral vision is diminished. Hence they should not be used while operating machines, driving and other activities involving motion.
Nowadays, many stylish and well-designed pinhole glasses are available in the market to meet the needs of consumers. Unless the pinholes break, they can be used for an entire lifetime.
