History

Biaxial-oriented polyethylene terephthalate (boPET) was first of its kind. It was developed to achieve ever growing need to incorporate better chemical and physical properties. It includes high tensile strength to replace steel, dimensional stability to replace iron and wood, transparency adds good looks, gas and aroma barrier properties and electrical insulation are other highly demanding properties. BoPET film was developed in the 1950s; DuPont and Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) were the two companies behind this great venture.

Most popular trade names for polyesters are Mylar film and melinex film.
Mylar generally refers to polyester film and plastic sheets. It is registered trademark for a specific family of plastic owned by Dupont Tejjin Films.

Mylar sheets can be found in different finishes such as Clear, White, Low, Moderate to high, Haze black, etc. Thickness of Mylar sheets varies from 0005" or 12 um to .014" or 350 um.
Applications

1. It enhances the property of glass. Laminations usually protects from ultra violet rays and harmful radiations. It can be found in variety of colors which adds to its lucrative value.
2. LCD and plasma televisions have diffusion coating of polyester. They are also known as anti glaring and anti reflection coating.
3. In medical industries it is used for x ray films and other medical strips.
4. Packaging can be done easily and gives more lucrative way of presentation.
5. Debit cards, credit cards, and lot more identity cards can be made lifelong by using this coating over them.
6. Printing films such as those of photography, xerography, digital printing and lot more can be achieved.
