Features, Functions, Fallacies Of Window Blinds

By: Judith Persit

There is a trinity of functions that are commonly considered the best applications window blinds. Firstly, adding an illuminated area of attraction to a room as a beautiful piece of decoration. The second is to control the degree of privacy, shielding the home interior from unwanted (and possibly dangerous) attention from strangers as well as providing total privacy at night. Finally, to keep the room at a comfortable temperature by reducing the amount of direct sunlight, many vertical blinds can be used to resolve these, and other situations.

In order to create a comfortable home, window blinds reduce heat in the house itself. This is a more cost effective way to reduce the temperature in the home, even though it is continuously heated from the outside. Vinyl blinds industry's claims notwithstanding; blinds from polyester woven fabric are considerably better in blocking sunlight and heat from entering the interiors. While PVC vertical louvers may provide privacy and reduce some amount of unwanted light entering the room, they are not effective in reducing the amount of heat entering the room, resulting in higher expenses in cooling the room. Besides heat, ultra violet light, also called UV light, can also enter the room and may be damaging if it is a significant amount.

Though some PVC vertical blinds and louvers do have an anti-UV layer added as an extra, blinds made from polyester woven fabric reduces far more amounts of UV entering the room and also may suffer less damage by ultra violet light. Blinds made from polyester woven fabric also score over PVC louvers because of greater flexibility. The degree to which the blind's material can stretch, either sideways or vertically, before the blind is damaged, is known as "the give."

Even with continuous usage, this window blinds material will not pull, distort or buckle, and sustain its newly purchased smart flush appearance. Nowadays, it's vital that everyone consider the environmental footprint of the products we use.

Discarded vertical blinds made of PVC are often burned and in that process, a highly corrosive and harmful chemical known as hydrochloric acid is released. It is widely believed that this hydrochloric acid is the cause of acid rain. It is a proven fact that woven fabrics are more beneficial to the environment over the years than their PVC based counterparts. Hence, window blinds produced from such woven fabrics are better for the environment after they have served their operating life and are ready to be replaced.

The weight factor is another important feature where woven fabrics blinds are superior to PVC vertical blinds. Window blinds made of woven fabrics weigh a lot less than comparable models made of PVC. The difference in weight may seem trivial when it comes to opening or closing the blinds. However, the greater weight creates a blind which hangs straight, and isn't so prone to flapping and clattering in a breeze. The additional weight makes a positive difference to window blinds' overall appearance.

The noise rating for plastic slapping into each other is annoying. This is a bit of a joke, but consider the choice of quiet window blinds from fabric, or large slats of PVC bumping into each other. The massive noise difference is never discussed in a sale, but think about it. It is a real fact that fabric is quieter. Not only the noise, by the way, but the gaudy look of plastic may cause a lot of “eye noise” which can be averted with fabrics.

In conclusion, when we consider the concerns expressed above, it becomes obvious that window blinds made from fabric, particularly from woven polyester, have considerably higher benefits than window blinds from PVC. Fabric window blinds are more attractive, more environmentally friendly, and even quieter.
