Five Questions And Answers About ADHD

By: Robert William Locke

What is the cause of ADHD in children ? Concerned parents can relax because it is NOT caused by too much TV, video games, poor diets, bad schooling, bad parenting and lack of vitamins! Much of the current research seems to point the finger at a genetic factor and/or biological causes.

Statistics show that there is a strong hereditary link in ADHD. The close relatives of families with ADHD are 25% more likely to suffer from the condition. The figures for the general popluation on the other hand are much lower - a mere 5%.

In a recent medical study punlished by the Lancet, the biological cause of ADHD has been established although more work needs to be done. The food colourings and additives (E102,E104 and E110) found most often in snacks and fizzy drinks, have been shown to significantly increase children's hyperactivity.

The neurotransmitters which help the brain's nerve cells communicate with each other may well be affected by a chemical imbalance and thereby not function at maximum capacity. When this happens, the child with ADHD will show impulsiveness, lack of attention and concentration.

Many experts believe that if certain snacks and drinks are to blame for ADHD, why are there no warning notices on the packaging to alert parents ? If that were to happen, there would be social implications as well, because children like to eat the same things as their peers. We are only at the beginning of this research so further studies are necessary.

How safe are the drugs which are used to treat children with ADHD? The most popular drugs are :- Concerta, Adderall and Ritalin. A popular non-stimulant drug on the market now is called Strattera.

What side effects are reported in children taking these drugs? Recently there has been a lot of attention in the press about this and there are concerns that children who already might have heart condition need to be monitored carefully. The drug called Adderall was withdrawn from the Canadian market because of this risk. Whatever drug is taken, children's heart conditon, blood pressure and blood tests need to be carried out on a regular basis.

Parents often seek alternatives to drugs. Diet, exercise and changes in routine can all have a beneficial effect. The great advantage in using herbal or homeopathic remedies is that they have no side effects and sedation is not a problem either. These remedies act by rebalancing any irregularities in the child's brain and nervous system, thereby ensuring serenity and good health.
