Question any of your married friends about what they learned while planning their wedding and reception and you'll get an earful of stories about what worked and what did not. Most likely what you'll discover could be summarized into a list of things to watch out for. But what if you could guarantee that their wedding process was great without any costly mistakes? The secret is to approach your wedding as a project. A project or process that has a clear start and end and to map out what needs to be done and when. If you never managed a project before - no worries. Here are the tips for planning that special day. First, begin your wedding planning as soon as possible. And while it may seem cool to invest in some special wedding software, all you really need is an Excel spreadsheet and a cheap monthly planner. A large purse or tote that you carry with you at all times is a great idea as well. That way you can place the monthly planner and samples in it and have them with you at all times. Next, calculate how much you are going to spend. The majority of weddings these days exceed $30,000. You can start with an assumption that with a formal wedding with a formal meal, drinks and music at the reception, you will spend at least $125 per invited guest. Of course there are ways to cut that amount by better than 50%. For now, start with determining your budget. The details can be filled in later. Having set what you'll spend you now need to set a date. The tricky thing is that the date will be determined primarily by where you get married (e.g. the church's availability) and the availability of the reception hall. It's best to check the availability of the church and hall and since the reception hall (if they also cater the food and drink) will be the biggest impact on your budget, It is clear why you needed to set what you can spend up front. In no case book a reception (with food and drink) that will end up being over 50% of your wedding budget. Stick to your plan. This is harder than it sounds. Every bride is tempted at every decision to outspend the budgeted amount but you need to be resolved. Keep an open mind and you'll be surprised at how much you can save and keep the wedding looking magical. Don't forget the fun factor. Yes wedding planning wears out many brides but if you have the plan done up in advance and don't spend more than you can afford, you'll be amazed at how much more relaxed and in control you are as compared to the thousands of 'bridezillas' who have preceded you.
