Free VoIP

By: Robert Thomson

Before understanding what free VoIP is, it is first important to know what VoIP itself is. VoIP actually stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol, and it is simply a different way to place calls, a way in which a phone is not even necessarily required.

One of the most popular uses for VoIP is when it is used to make long distance calls, and that is where the idea of free VoIP comes into the picture. If two people make a VoIP call from one computer to the other, then it is free VoIP, because there is absolutely no long distance charge. Free VoIP works in this way: Person A uses his computer in Maine to call Person B on her computer in California; the sounds which Person A makes - the words he says - are transmitted from his computer through IP Protocol, allowing Person B to hear what he says over her computer.

The proper infrastructure for the Internet is necessary to accomplish this, but there are many companies available which offer free VoIP services. Rather than a complicated, often expensive long distance phone plan, all one needs in order to use free VoIP are computer speakers, a microphone, and a strong, steady connection to the Internet. VoIP is useful in other cases as well, such as if one person has a computer and the other has only a phone. It works for people wishing to communication through their telephones as well, although the service is generally not free under those circumstances.

Paid VoIP services do, however, make it possible to make long distance and international calls at a much cheaper rate than most phone companies - for land lines as well as cell phones. Given the fact that almost everyone has a personal computer these days, VoIP may well replace even cell phones when it comes to making long distance calls in the future.
