GOLF--Find Out How To Instantly Improve Your Golf Chipping Ability

By: Justin Flowers

Golf rounds are frequently won or lost in the "short game." You will be aware that the short game is much to do with golf chipping and pitching. To succeed in the sport of golf, you must become capable at golf chipping. A golf chip is not a pitch; pitching is more lofted and is accomplished with a wedge. Golf chipping comes into play when you are around 10 to 15 yards off the green.

A bad chip often results from hitting the golf ball too low or too high. You'll either finish up with a "fat" chip (also known as a "chucker") that dies where it lies. The other possibility is a "thin" chip (also called a "skull") that goes flying over the green, giving you an excellent opportunity to chip from the other side.

Effective golf chipping requires that you hit the ball first, not the ground. Some players describe it as "squeezing" the ball between the club head and the turf. One of the hardest things to do is to accelerate your swing properly. The most common concern that golfers have when chipping is hitting the golf ball too far. That anxiety often causes you to unconsciously slow down your swing. Decelerating is precisely what you don't want to do. To keep your acceleration without overrunning the green, take a shorter backswing. As a general rule, your chipping backswing will probably be about 25% to 50% of your normal backswing.

So which of your clubs is best for golf chipping? Golfers argue over the proper club to use. Ultimately, the best club for you is that which you personally prefer, the one with which you are able to control the spin better, and the one that gives you better overall precision. Try out each of your clubs to find one that seems to work the best for you. Afterwards spend all your time practicing with that club. A majority of golfers believe that it's preferable to master one club and control the flight of the golf ball by adjusting your backswing. That way you don't have to master four or five clubs and then choose the correct one based on the distance factor alone.

The stance for chipping should be narrower than your normal stance. You should also be closer to the ball and choke up on the club. The ball should be back in your stance to help you hit the ball more solidly.

The best golf chips are low and aimed at getting the ball rolling as soon as you can. With golf chipping, you're not trying to hit the golf ball up and high. One exception is when your lie puts you behind an impediment of some kind. When the outlook is clear concentrate on getting to the green without a lot of fanfare.

A successful short game is mostly based on feel, which can only be consistently learned with regular practice. Constant practice of your chip shots will help you find out which club is best for you and how to attain the best form. Of course you can practice golf chipping without going to the driving range. Lay out a target in your garden and then practice landing the ball within the target area and notice how your skill picks up.
