Gay Magazines: News Without The Porn

By: Kelly Renaul

Magazines and news sources have printed numerous stories about the Gay community and their battles with societal norms. An effort to pass a ban on same sex marriages in the state of Indiana is being renewed, and is being presented with new wording. The proposed ban would prohibit civil unions without affecting the domestic partner benefits that are offered by some employers in the state.

Many people do not think that the bill, which would move forward the gay rights movement in the state, will pass through the House and the Senate though. Part of the reason is that Indiana already has a law that bans same sex marriage, and it is a law that has been upheld by every judge that has faced it.

Rep. Dave Cheatham and Rep. P. Eric Turner both have said that they will sponsor the proposed amendment with identical wording in the House, and Sen. Marlin Stutzman said that he will file the amendment in the Senate. Supporters of the amendment say that it is needed because the courts that operate in other states have tried to strike down the statutes on marriage. Supporters are pushing the legislative leaders to give the amendment a hearing and a vote.

In the past, this amendment has been opposed by universities and businesses in Indiana because they feared that it would conflict with the policies they have that grant benefits to the partners of gay employees.

Economic development, they feared, would be compromised as well because the bill as it stands seems to make Indiana seem like an intolerant state, some say. Wisconsin and Kentucky both have amendments with identical wording that has not hurt the domestic violence laws, domestic partnerships, or the economic
development in either of those states.

The new amendment that is being proposed states that only a marriage between one man and one woman is valid and recognized as marriage in Indiana. Furthermore, a legal status identical or similar to marriage for unmarried people will not be recognized or valid by the state.

Previously, the proposed amendment had stated that marriage in Indiana consists only of the union of one man and one woman. This constitution or any other Indiana law may not be construed to require that the marital status or the legal incidents of marriage be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups.

While this small battle for gay rights continues, Turner has said that two thirds of the countrys population lives under similar amendments, and have been approved by a majority of the voters in 30 of our states.
