Unless you live in an RV, you need furniture for your home. Buying furniture is all about understanding what you are getting into. Here are some tips as well as some advice on caring for it. 1. Determining A Good Mattress – A good mattress should sink a bit when you lie on it. It should not be a grand canyon after you get up. Otherwise, go by feel after laying down on it for 10 to 15 minutes. 2. 20 Percent Furniture Discount – When buying furniture, it is important that ask for a discount. A good starting point is to ask for 20 percent off. Dealers will often give it. 3. Hard and Soft Wood – One would think a hardwood is better than a softwood. This is not really the case. 4. Coil Mattress Guidelines – With coil mattresses, the more coils there are, the better. 540 is usually the top count and an excellent mattress. 5. MDF Labels – Look out for MDF on furniture labels. While the salesperson may be trying to tell you it is solid wood, MDF means it is medium density fiberboard. 6. Slip Sliding Furniture – If you need to move furniture around a house, you can do it easily now. An enterprising company has pads you can place on the bottom of the legs that slide. 7. Stripping Furniture Finish – If you are a do it yourself kind of person, you need to know what you are getting into. Stripping the finish off furniture sometimes does not get rid of the color. Make sure you know before spending the time. 8. Department Store Furniture – Avoid it! It is difficult to get discounts from department stores. Find the furniture you like and then go negotiate a better deal at an independent retailer. 9. Squeaky Wood Beds – If you have a big wood bed and it squeaks, you are being warned the joints may be coming loose. Have it checked out. 10. Drawers Are Sticking – How many times have you run into the problem of drawers sticking? Lots, I bet. You can use a paste furniture wax on the surfaces that rub. It will slide like a dream after that. An important thing to remember is there is no reason you have to commit to a purchase right now. You can take your time. Many people will purchase pieces over months instead of all at once.
