Silk Plants versus Real Plants If you are planning to add some greenery to your home, consider whether you want them to be live or silk. There are some advantages and disadvantages with either selection. Make sure that if you choose live plants, sunlight and water are readily available to them. If there are a lot of insects where you live, real plants and flowers may not be a good idea, because critters often make their homes there. However, there is a degree of fulfillment you get when caring for living things that you cannot have with artificial ones. Some benefits to artificial plants include the ease of storage, maintenance, and transport. The biggest factor to look at is how “life-like” it appears. Artificial plants can be beautiful, but if it is obvious that they are not real, they lose some of their charm. The “clearly fake” look can be quite unattractive. Decorating with Topiaries The topiary field is an example of horticultural artwork: topiary plants are trimmed and shaped into specialized figures and designs. Most often the plants used for topiary purposes are extremely dense. These topiaries come in every shape and sizes ranging from elephants, squirrels and people to elaborate designs, mazes, and even tunnels. Many people who love topiaries but do not have a place to display a 20-foot shrub choose to decorate their houses with much smaller silk topiaries. One place you can often find silk topiaries are in office buildings, places of worship, and larger public gathering places. A very popular look for silk topiaries includes a spiral shape, because it can be very small but decorative. The Array of Silk Trees Available Many people find it surprising to see that there are literally hundreds of styles of silk trees to choose from. The most well-known silk tree is the pine tree (Christmas tree). Some of the less renowned trees may be perfect for your needs, but you didn’t know they exist. For example, the banana tree is an exotic option that is somewhat similar in appearance to the palm tree. A very diverse look from this is the bonsai tree, whose leaves are tiny and very intricate by comparison. The many designs available for the bonsai tree are quite striking and creative. A third, less commonly used idea is silk grass, including bear grass, horsetail, and even cattail. The more you get to look at and experiment with different alternatives, the more likely you are to hit on just the right design for your home. A Different Way to Look at Decorating Your Home Interior design can be a lot of fun
