Guide to the Different Types of Trade Show Signs and Displays

One key to success of exhibiting at a trade show is to attract attendees to stop by your booth during the 8 seconds it takes to walk past a 10 foot wide booth. Often, attendees tend to look at each booth's signage and displays to get an idea of the products, services, and selling points offered by each company. The displays and signage for the booth should convey the quality and professionalism of the company's products and services. A great first impression can be made by the design and positioning of the graphic signs for each booth. Thus it is important to prepare all show signs and understand the different types of trade show signs available to start budgeting and designing them before the show.

Booth Backdrop/Background Displays

Curved faced pop up booths: Elegant in design with its curved wave style front, easy to set up, expandable metal frame with magnetic graphic panels. Range in size from 4'x4' to upwards of 8'x20'. The typical size of the curved faced backdrop booths are 8'x9' for a standard 10'x10' booth.

Straight faced pop up booths: Similar to curved face pop up booths, but with a straight front face. Easy to set up, expandable metal frame with magnetic graphic panels. Range in size from 4'x4' to upwards of 8'x20'. The typical size of the curved faced backdrop booths are 8'x9' for a standard 10'x10' booth.

Straight faced fabric pop up: Similar to a straight faced pop up booth, but uses just 1 large graphic printed fabric panel instead of several magnetic graphic panels. Very easy to set up-pop up style. Easy to set up and take down, but graphics are not quite as vibrant as the PVC panel pop up booths as described above.

Floor Standing Banners

Retractable Banners: When retracted, the banner stands are tubular in shape-stands can be either aluminum or composite plastic material. To set up, just pull up the spring loaded banner and hook onto the included pole. To take down, unhook and the banner retracts by itself back into the tubular stand. These are the most common type of trade show standing banners for its simplicity, portability, and ease of use. There is a wide range of sizing for the banners, but the most typical size is ~80cm x 200cm (3' x 7').

X-Stand Banners: Using a light metal X shaped frame, a PVC printed graphic banner with grommets is hooked onto the frame to create a simple floor standing banner. The X-stand banners are also very portable and durable. Higher end X-stands have a wider stand for more stability if using the banner outdoors for wind resistance. The main benefit of X-stands over the retractable banners is to have the ability to interchange the graphics easily-you can have 1 X-stand with several PVC graphic banners and have a rotation of the banners. There are also very many size variations to X-stand banners.

L-stand Banners: Very compact and easy to set up, the L-stand banners are made of either plastic or aluminum to create a simple stand that holds up graphic banners in sort of an I shape. There varying sizes of L-stand banners as well. The main benefit of L-stand banners is the streamlined look that can be achieved when you put 3 or 4 L-stand banners together to form a backdrop mural.

Graphic Tables and Podiums

Promotional Tables: Easy to assemble and disassemble table for promoting products and brochures. The tables include a wrap around plastic graphic panel, plus a top sign to increase visibility. Tables even have a shelf on the inside to store products and brochures.

Podiums: Podiums are simple and compact, while most include graphic wraparounds that promote the company's logo and/or products. The podium is a great way to place brochures out for people to grab in an elegant and eye-catching way.

Other Banners and Signs

Vinyl Banners: Full color graphic vinyl banners are a great addition to any trade show booth or event. The size of the banners usually can be customized to any desired rectangular size. Then grommets or Velcro can be added to the banner to either hang up or attach anywhere-along walls, as table skirts, etc. Great for both indoor and outdoor use because of its durability and also portability.

Foam Board Prints: Custom printed foam boards can add a great dimension to any booth. Foam boards can be printed on and die cut to any shape and size. Metal or cardboard stands can be used to make the foam boards stand on the ground or on table tops to attract great attention.

PP and PVC Banners: Similar to outdoor vinyl banners, PP or PVC printed banners are a little more clear and vibrant print quality. However, they are slightly less durable and are mainly used for indoor use. PVC banners are thicker and more durable than PP banners.

Teardrop Flags: Teardrop shaped pop up flags made from durable printed fabric material are great eye-catching props for both indoor and outdoor use. Teardrop flags tend to come in small, medium, and large sizes-they work well in flagging people down and the company logo or other graphics can be printed onto them.

Understanding the different types of trade show displays and signs can help one prepare to plan the booth's look at an upcoming trade show. It is best to design the booth layout and the display graphics as early as possible, as it takes time to create the custom pieces. A well designed and well planned trade show booth can make a huge difference in the amount of attendees attracted and the overall professionalism conveyed by the company during the show.
