Puppy leash training is actually not a tedious task. It is simple and easy to do if you really want your puppy to have a proper training. A puppy is not that hard to train. The training should start right on the puppy’s first day at home, or when the puppy can already walk around. This will make him familiarize with the leash as well as this would make an easier job for the owner in training the puppy later for other exercises. There are three basic steps in puppy leash training. The procedure involves only a little patience and some basic praising and rewarding of the puppy.
First, wear the puppy a collar. Let your pup familiarize with the collar for some time. Get a good quality collar made of leather or nylon. Make sure also that the collar will be lightweight and loose enough so that it will not choke the puppy. Adjust the collar as the puppy grows and let it be worn even when the pet has fully grown. The next stage of the puppy leash training is the attachment of the leash. Introduce the leash to the puppy once he is already accustomed with wearing the collar. Attach the leash into the collar and let the puppy walk around. Let the puppy walk freely with the leash for some time.
Then you can begin to have a short walk with your pup around the house or in the backyard with the leash attached onto the collar when the puppy becomes comfortable with the leash. It is important to praise or reward your puppy while he is walking with you. If the puppy leash training is properly done, the puppy would want to wear the leash because it would mean playtime or walk time in the backyard or on the street. But if the puppy was forced to wear the collar and the leash, he will definitely resist wearing the collar every time and the training will become more difficult. Hence the key here is to make the puppy leash training a fun and rewarding experience for the puppy. As such, it might be helpful to use the leash as a signal for a reward or an activity.
When the puppy gets accustomed to wearing the collar and the leash, training him with “sit,” “stay” or “heel” will no longer be difficult both for the pup and the trainer. The puppy can freely move, follow the instructions and obey the commands along with the leash. The puppy leash training can also serve as a helpful aid for the puppy with the other advanced exercises. Wearing the leash would give him an idea that an activity will be done. And every activity means reward every time he obeys the command of the owner. The more positive attitude your puppy has with the leash, the easier it will be to train him with the other exercises.
More importantly, animals will learn through a consistency in command. So it is important that the commands during trainings are consistent so that the puppy will not get confused. Puppy leash training needs more patience in order for the puppy to learn and understand the instructions and commands.
