How to Differentiate Between a Normal Cold and the Common Flu The common cold and the Normal Flu are both respiratory illnesses, but they are started by dissimilar types of viruses. Flu symptoms usually come on very sudden (within 3-6 hours) and consist of a high body temp, achy body, dry cough, and extreme sluggishness. An Average cold ailments are not as bad and individuals will experience a stuffy nose, chest congestion, slight lethargy, and limited body soreness. Like an ice cube for a burn blister or cough drops for a cough, a cup of hot tea with lemon and honey is an age-old remedy for runny noses, sneezing and congested chest. Hot soups, it is said, help loosen congestion in the chest and sinuses, making them easier to expel and ultimately clearing up a bad cough. The liquids are also meant to reverse dehydration. But only recently have researchers examined if the effect is real. In December, researchers at the Common Cold Center at Cardiff University in Britain studied whether hot fluids relieved the ailments of 30 individual suffering from the normal flu or a cold any better than beverages at room temperature. They discovered that the difference was distinctive. The hot beverages provided instantaneous and sustained relief from symptoms of runny nose, chest congestion, sneezing, sore throat, being cold and tiredness, they reported, and the exact drinks at room temperature only provided relief from symptoms of runny nose, cough and sneezing. As this was the first scientific study to look specifically at the effects of hot beverages on cold and flu symptoms, other research have looked at hot foods like chicken soup and had similar results. Chicken soup also contains cold-fighting characteristics that help dissolve mucus in the lungs and suppress inflammation. The Truth Scientific study confirms that hot liquids can decrease a cough and other cold and flu symptoms. Does Vitamin C Really Help an average cold? For many years, supporters of vitamin C have said taking this vitamin supplement can nip a cold in the bud. The claim is partially triggered by scientific studies that find vitamin C affects resistance to virus in animal research. But in people? Experts disagree on this slightly but lean toward the negative. Some say vitamin C has not been proven to shorten the length of a cold. One 2007 research showed that if vitamin C is taken after a cold starts, it doesn't shorten the cold or make it less severe. But when it is taken daily as a preventive treatment, not just after that first runny nose, it can very slightly lessen cold duration, by about 8% in adults and by about 14% in children. Preventing the Common Flu with Antivirals Not only can antivirals help treat the everyday flu, they can also help stop you from getting it. For example, if your spouse is diagnosed with the flu, an antiviral can help to protect you from getting this virus. Be sure to talk to your doctor about prevention so when that time comes that someone close to you has the flu, you can protect yourself.
