You wouldn't believe how plain it is, to make other people smile..Explaining why is this that we find stuff amusing (from a intelligent psychologists way of thinking), is the first thing to do.When we recognize new stuff, then our brain makes the new path, from a cell to another cell.

That path is what we call the synapse and it works, for example, like this:If we, let's say think about food, and we recall that watermelons are food, then the brain builds a connection (synapse, that is getting tougher & thicker) between the brain cells that stock the info we have on food and those with that fruit. The next time the food pops up in your mind, there are good chances the apples will come along, as well. You're probably thinking, what does that have to do with me getting funnier? But, it's pretty much all about it, it's actually the way humor works.

Everything starts with you hearing a plain and common story. Stand-up comedians call this a setup. Now, you're supposed to think about this story in a certain way. And so, our brain will now make a path which will go from the setup to it's suitable punch-line. A completely different version of the punch-line, that you have not thought of, is what will make you laugh. And in case, you don't get this, the following example will help you out.

The Setup:
What is the most satisfying thing next to being shot at and missed?
The Punch-line:
An income tax refund.

What did you think when you heard the setup? I am sure you have thought that the car is being driven by one of the three men. It's ok, because our brain simply works that way, during the setup. And as I already said, the punch-line you read was indeed very different. Be sure to remember this, as this is the main principle of humor.

A good setup is of great importance. Good comedians will always have a setup that only delivers the basic facts, so that there are many possible punch-lines you can think of. Now, the more you believe your punch-line is the best one, the more you'll laugh when you hear the real one. If you know the joke, you won't find it funny anymore, because you brain won't be making any new connections as you know the punch-line.
