How bad could Generalized Anxiety Disorder act upon a patient?

By: Robert Thomson

Anguish, fear and an uneasy state of mind are integral part of everyday lives of huge number of anxiety disorders victims from all around the Globe. Ordinary fear and anxiety are an important part of human existence. They help us to escape nasty and unsafe situations and therefore have warning or adaptive function.

The fear is every time related to one specific thing or a situation and anxiety is an indeterminate emotional event. The menace in anxiety disorders is less obvious, unclear, and it is usually explained as a floating fear. If the fears, worries and anxiety start to conquer and control patients life, when they start to seriously interfere with their family, social and business activities, then we can say that the individual most likely suffers from an anxiety disorder.

Psychological symptoms of anxiety disorders are excessive fear and trembling, feeling of constant stress or internal turmoil, hard to concentrate. The patient gets angry very easily and can become extremely sensitive to noises. Also, in most instances anxiety disorder victims develop insomnia (they have big difficulties to have a rest, they wake up many times during the night and could have nightmares during their sleep.)

Common physical symptoms of anxiety disorders are: palpitations or skipping heart beats, feeling difficulties swallowing, dry mouth, problems with breathing (lack of air), chest discomfort, frequent need to urinate, weakened sexual desire, noise in ears, pins and needles in hands and feet, shaky hands and many more, depending on the severity.

Anxiety disorders might be divided in seven main categories: Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder or Social Phobia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Specific Phobia and Agoraphobia.

The main characteristics of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) are: frequent illogical worries, anxiety, fear and expectations of something horrible that might happen, which occur most of the days in a span of at least 2-6 months. The patients find uneasy to control their worries which are in great measure exaggerated taking into account the situation. Adult patients suffering from GAD most of the time worry about everyday life, the responsibilities in the workplace, finances, family health, unpleasant things that could happen to their kids, family members, loved relatives etc.
Unreasonable fear completely overpowers the sufferers and makes them to feel paralyzed, helpless and unsecure.

In general, GAD is in most cases treated by combination of psychotherapy (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy) and medication. Drugs mostly used are Antidepressants from the group of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) and at the start of the treatment Benzodiazepines. Some medication free therapies and programs developed by former sufferers are also producing impressive results and can be obtained on the internet.
