How do you deal with a Whiplash Injury

By: Steve Katz Jr

Many people who are involved in a car accident suffer from a Whiplash Injury and in most cases people don't get the care and attention that this sort of injury should have. In this article we are going to take a look at the different steps that someone should take when they have been involved in a road traffic accident and they get the first signs of a whiplash injury through to how to go about putting in a whiplash injury claim to ensure you are fully compensated for your injury.

In a majority of cases people who suffer a car accident do not actually start feeling pain until a few hours and in many cases a few days after the incident occurs. It is important that as soon as you start to feel a stiff neck or pain in your neck or back you should get yourself or get someone to take you to your doctor or the emergency room straight away. In many cases when you get to your choice of medical centre you will have to fill out a form all about the accident that you have been involved in order to ensure that they can claim back the cost of your treatment from the insurance company.

A whiplash injury is where the muscles, tendons and ligaments in the neck have been stretched and causes damage to the previously mentioned soft tissues. This sort of soft tissue damage is known as a cervical sprain, hyperextension or whiplash injury. Symptoms for this type of injury include:

Headaches
Dizziness
Lower Back Pain
Blurred Vision
Shoulder Pain
Stiffness in the neck and shoulders
Numbness or tingling down through the arms to the hands
Ringing in the ears.

In most cases the standard treatment for whiplash injury is to encase the neck in a supportive collar to stop the movement that will irritate the injury further. It is better to have a soft collar for the few days after the accident to allow the injury to heal a little at a time and allow movement to return gradually. It is advisable to apply an ice pack to the area to ensure that it does not swell too much, take a regular non steroid anti inflammatory drug such as aspirin or ibuprofen (allergies permitting) and most of all to rest initially and gently increase your movement.

In most cases your GP or Emergency Room doctor will be able to advise you on the best course of action for your treatment but chances are it will be one of the ones mentioned above with the addition of some physiotherapy or a visit to an osteopath or chiropractor. In all cases you should seek the advice of a doctor.

You also need to ensure that you keep all of your receipts for any out of pocket expenses that you may encounter, if you have been involved in an accident for which you were not responsible for then you are entitled to make a claim for anything that you are out of pocket. You are also entitled to do this without incurring any legal costs from anyone. The main thing is that you get better; from there you can look at getting compensation from the insurance companies with as little hassle as possible.

In the UK legislation is that the insurance company of the party to blame picks up the cost of all legal costs meaning the money that is awarded either in a settlement or a court award goes entirely to the victim and not into the pockets of the legal team that represent you. The legal team then presents their costs which are covered by the insurance companies by demand of the courts.

It all sounds complicated but the main fact is that you do not have to be out of pocket when it comes to claiming money from an accident that has not been your fault.
