How microdermabrasion machines work

By: Andrew Paine

Recent developments in skin cosmetic procedures mean that the biggest problem you are likely to face in improving your skin condition is choosing which treatment is best for you. There are literally dozens of different treatments all claiming to have excellent results on common skin conditions like acne, acne scarring, rosacea and sun damages skin to name a few. However, it remains a fact that despite the wide range of treatments available, microdermabrasion is still one of the most popular treatments offered by beauty spas. The microdermabrasion machine is seen by many in the industry as the must have piece of equipment for any beauty spa or skin clinic.

Probably the single most impressive feature of microdermabrasion machines is that despite their simple design they are effective in treating a wide range of skin problems with a proven track record of providing great results. Some of the common skin conditions for which microdermabrasion is a good treatment include age wrinkles, sun damaged skin, stretch marks and acne scars. The success a patient is likely to have with microdermabrasion depends on a few variables, the most important of which are usually the depth of the skin imperfection and how long they have had it. The longer a patient has had acne scars for example, the more imbedded in their skin it will be and consequently it will be harder to treat. This is especially so with microdermabrasion as it should be pointed out quite honestly that despite its effectives on a wide range of skin problems, these are mostly superficial, and in fact microdermabrasion machines are by and large built to be effective only on treating the superficial layers of skin.

There are literally dozens of microdermabrasion machines on the market these days with every skin care equipment producer wanting to cash in on the large demand for these devices. Despite the fact that every machine manufacturer will try to differentiate their machine from the rest through various design features, the truth is that all microdermabrasion machines work in pretty much the same way and consist of the same main components. The four critical elements that go into making a microdermabrasion machine are; the air pump, tube, wand & to a lesser extent the crystals. The wand is the part of the machine that the skin care professional holds in their hand and comes into contact with your skin. The tube is what connects the wand to the main machine, which is where the air pump resides and provides the air pressure to blast the microdermabrasion crystals onto your skin as well as suck away the spent crystals and dead skin.

Provided the skin care professional has received adequate training, using a microdermabrasion machine is really a simple procedure with little to no risk of side effects, provided a few basic precautionary steps are followed. Firstly the wand should be sanitized so as not to spread bacteria from the previous patient. Some machines operate using disposable wands, but most are made from steel or glass and requiring them to be soaked in antiseptic between uses. The machine needs to be filled with clean unused crystals before it is turned on and the treatment begins. Once on the machine’s vacuum sends the crystals through the tube to the wand which is placed on the patient’s facial or body skin. The crystals are delivered to the skin at high enough speed to cause an abrasive effect resulting in small parts of the outer layers of skin coming off; hence the name microdermabrasion! It’s important to understand that the device’s vacuum is also responsible for sucking away those dead skin cells and spent crystals.

Microdermabrasion machines are usually placed into one of two categories; medical grade and spa grade. Like the names suggest, spa grade machines are usually found in spas whereas medical grade machines are reserved only for dermatologists. The only real difference between these machines in fact is power. Spa grade machines are deliberately built with limited power so as to make them fool proof. Even if the treatment provider doesn’t know what they are doing and put the machine on full power the machine itself is not powerful enough to cause real damage. Medical grade machines however are much more powerful and can potentially cause harsh side effects if too much power is used. Sometimes, such power is needed to get to really deep seated skin problems, but only a qualified dermatologist should attempt such treatments as they will be able to sufficiently take into account the risks of side effects within a broader overall treatment program.
