In school, we learned about renewable and non-renewable resources. However, we never paid much attention to the rapid consumption of non-renewable resources until recently. The world is faced with a severe energy crisis now and no-one will remain unaffected forever. There are many ways to save power around the home. Computer: Often, we don't switch off our monitors even after we have shut down our computers. Keep the monitor and the computer switched off when you are not using them. Light bulbs: As a power-saving measure, start using CFL light bulbs as much as you can. If you are thinking they are more expensive than the regular bulbs, the benefits of CFL bulbs will prove much more cost-effective in the long turn by the amount of power they save. Air Conditioner: Set the temperature at the minimum or maximum you are comfortable with, depending on the season. Setting the air conditioner at reasonable temperatures will save a lot of energy. Washing Machines: Do you use your washing machine as often as you want? Do you use your washing machine even when there is not a full load? Minimize the number of washes by washing a full load of clothes every time. Television: Unplug your television set when not using it. This may not sound like a big deal but this tiny step will help save power. Refrigerator: Cool hot food to room temperatures before putting it into the refrigerator. You can also save power by taking cold or frozen food out of the refrigerator to thaw before you eat it, saving power in heating it. Car: For the air-conditioner in a car, roll up the windows of your car before switching on the air-conditioner. These simple practices may not seem like much, but every little thing you do will add up and you will find your energy bills reduced every month.
