How to Stop Your Dog From Barking

There can be alot of reasons why your puppy would bark too much. This can be quite annoying, there can be some good reasons for this behavior. Your puppy can be trying to warn you of a threat or trying to tell you it is hurt.

There are other less appropriate reasons why your puppy would be acing this way. They could be attempting to gain attention or be acting out intentionally.

Whatever the reason, a puppy that will not quit barking can definitely give you a headache. If the behavior is recurring there are some techniques that you may attempt.

Oftentimes, you can get your dog to stop barking by using a type of training. There are some specific methods and devices to assist with the problem of your barking dog.

Most cases of incessant barking can be controlled by proper training and a reward and reprimand system where you teach the dog when to bark and when not to. When the dog barks at at the wrong times, they are scolded and told "no barking". When they act properly and refrain from barking when they should not be, praise them to reinforce this positive behavior.

If the situation can't be fixed this way, you may elect to consider the purchase of a bark collar. A bark collar will shock the dog with a very small current when it detects the dog barking. The shock gives the dog very small discomfort and does not actually hurt the puppy. It should be noted that some dog owners don't approve of this method.

There is a similar device available that as opposed to a shock delivers a mist of citronella. Dogs do not like the smell and they soon realize it is due to the barking.

In some extreme situations, your vet may consider your dog a candidate a type of debarking surgery. This surgery is the removal of a fold of tissue from the dog's larynx which leaves the dog unable to bark. The surgery isn't always effective and isn't often used.

While a barking dog can certainly drive you up the wall, as you can see it is not a situation that can't be fixed. With the right amount of patience and training, you can stop your dog's incessant barking.
