How to Winterize a Water Garden Pond

By: Christopher Smith

There are many steps to take when winterizing a water garden pond. Each must be followed to ensure the continued success of your fish and plants. But by following this guide, it should be quick and easy to do just that, and keep your water garden pond healthy.

First, you must know if you have a soft or hard pond liner. In this article, we will outline the steps that you must take for a soft liner. Do remember that there is a difference, and make sure that you do keep in mind which you have in your pond.

First, you need to remove half of the pond's water. To do this, you will need to disconnect your pump, and reconnect the water to another hose that pumps away from your pond. This is going to make the rest of your steps much easier, by making it easier to see.

Your second step to to remove your potted plants. You will need to trim those plants, because if you do not, the leaves will fall into your pond as they die over the winter, which will make your pond dirty, and will be dangerous for your fish.

If any of your plants need repotting, hold off until the spring. Repotting in the fall will weaken your plant. If you have water lilies, they must be cut to their base, and should also not be repotted until the warmer spring to ensure their health.

You must then catch your fish, placing them in buckets filled with pond water. This clears the way for you to remove any debris from your pond, which will make the water healthier for your fish. The debris can be used as an excellent mulch.

Next, place your plants back in the pond. Leave them in at least one and a half feet of water that will remain under the freezing line. As long as you have hardy plants, and your water is at least three feet deep, they will survive. Next, you can return your hose to its pump.

Finally, return your fish to the pond. You can stop feeding you fish when the temperature hits 50 degrees, and should again feed them when the temperature hits 55 degrees. Make sure you keep a hole in the ice winter long for your fish, creating it with warmth, and not a hammer. And you have winterized a garden pond for winter!
