Are you satisfied with your IT staff? Here is a simple truth - you have the same technology needs as a large business. There are two main differences between your company and a large one. First, you (most likely) do not have the budget for IT that a large company has. Second, although you need the same skill sets as the big companies, you do not need them full time. As with any department, in IT you should employ only the skill sets you need on a full time basis. Once you have done that, outsource the rest. This does two things. First, it keeps you from having to ask the employee to do something beyond the skills you have hired for. Second, it allows you to save money by outsourcing part time needs for part time work. There are two ways to outsource your technology skills; on a project basis and on a retainer. If you need a website built or a system installed, hire out the project. If you need your systems maintained on a weekly or monthly basis, hire a company on a month to month retainer, or even setup a support contract with the vendor of your system. By following the above guidelines, it is possible to have the full range of IT skills at your disposal for approximately the same cost as hiring a full time Systems Administrator.
