Keeping ourselves healthy by eating fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants can be a good way of keeping the years from showing their effects on our skin. But did you know antioxidants are also being used as effective ingredients in manufacturing anti-aging skin care products? Sources of antioxidants like Ascorbyl Palmitate (a form of fat soluble Vitamin C) and green tea extracts which contain catechin polyphenols have been used to manufacture the best anti-aging creams and serums, but the most potent of the six leading antioxidants is Idebenone. From the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, in a study done by a group of researchers who developed the first ever protocol to compare the efficacy of antioxidants on their effects on preventing free-radical skin-damage, Idebenone received a score of 95 out of a 100, which was the highest score among the six leading antioxidants. Coenzyme Q10 or Co Q10 is a naturally occurring enzyme; Idebenone is a man-made analogue of this natural body product. Co Q10 is an essential antioxidant component of fatty or lipid membranes that surround every cell. Co Q10 also surrounds other little organs or organelles, such as microsomes and mitochondria, which are the inside cells. Idebenone is a synthetic cell energizer and it works by producing the needed energy for the reproduction of cells. Idebenone differs from Co Q10 in one area. Co Q10 can shift from an anti-oxidizing process to an auto-oxidizing one while in a low oxygen or hypoxic state. This produces free radicals rapidly leading to body tissue damage which results to aging. In clinical studies, Idebenone has been proven to fight free radical damage to body tissues by relatively maintaining the ATP levels of normal cell development. In order to understand how Idebenone provides anti-aging benefits we must read about mitochondrial processes in cells. The mitochondrial power plants produce over 90% of all cellular ATP bioenergy. They are also generally the richest sites in Co Q10 (or Idebenone). Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) allows mitochondria to reproduce themselves. As we age, our levels of mtDNA endure more damage, while the production of mitochondria becomes increasingly more unproductive in their means of generating energy. The heart muscle, brain cells and skeletal muscle are the most susceptible to the depletion of mitochondrial energy as we age and the regeneration of cells begin. Consequently, the cells die and a variety of developing diseases occur as the years advance upon us. Idebenone, therefore, provides an anti-aging effect here in several ways. Unlike Co Q10, even under the low oxygen conditions that may occur periodically over a lifetime, Idebenone will serve as a powerful mitochondrial free radical quencher, lessening the ever-increasing mtDNA damage that occurs with age. Idebenone will work even better than Co Q10 within the electron transport chain to keep energy production high, even under hypoxic conditions.
