Sometimes when I am at the craft store, it is easy to think that buying a certain item will add so much to the look of my home. This mode of thought not only leaves me constantly wanting for the next available item but also leaves my wallet empty. The sad truth of the matter is that when I finally do succumb, my new treasure of a purchase all too often appears as clutter and ends up at my next yard sale. I have learned (slowly) that often the best solution to having a fresh change is to use what I already have. It doesn’t take a lot of effort, but I feel like I have a brand new look. Not does this expand my talents, but it helps to keep my wallet fat! Decorating in an Arid Environment Bringing some elements of local nature inside the house makes for great interior decorating. Arid climates provide a lot of unique and beautiful decorating elements. When decorating in a rural or dry area, consider some plant varieties such as grass horsetails, bear grass, or cactus. Consider adding a few decorations that involve rocks or sand. Aside from the greener plants, focus your colors on reds, oranges, yellows, and browns. Consider choosing an artificial cactus instead of a genuine one, especially if young ones are around. They are not extremely dangerous, but it would not be a fun afternoon picking out the needles after a child has pulled a cactus plant on top of himself or herself. Keeping your Décor (Relatively) Simple Home decor can be a lot of different things to a lot of different people. One thing that it should never be is dysfunctional. Dysfunctional home décor gets in the way of day-to-day life. There are those who decorate so enthusiastically that there is hardly enough space to stand up or sit down. You may have had the experience of walking into someone’s garage and seeing that it is so full of decorative materials that there is not enough room for anything else (like an automobile). Though form is important, remember that function comes first. For example, the kitchen is a highly trafficked area, and counter space is usually more valuable for cooking than for decorating. At the other end of the spectrum, bedrooms are places where some decorative touches are welcomed and appreciated. One rule to live by is that if something has to be moved three times a week or more to not be in the way, it should probably be kept somewhere else and replaced with something more practical. Tips for Seasonal Décor As you prepare to decorate your house for different seasons, keep a few things in mind to make your life a little easier. One of the best things you can do to reduce the clutter and the need for storage is to have a specific place in your home for thematic design. This could be a calendar area that is designed differently each month, or a shelf on the wall with craft items. If you have young children at home, a cute way to decorate with durable, non-dangerous materials is to choose a stuffed animal and change what it wears with each month or season. The next big tip is the power of reusing. Take a look at your seasonal crafts, and see if you can change or add to them to fit a different time of year. One of the best examples is exchanging your wreath from one season to another by removing the flowers and replacing them with new flowers appropriate for that season.
