If you own an 'ancient' TV, then buying a Sony PS3 game machine may be just the excuse to think about aquiring your first one. In recent years tellys have got wider and leaner, but have they improved ? The most recent trend is HDTV, giving amazing image quality, but at a price. Have a look on the web, or in the TV stores and you will see a huge quantity of High Def sets available. Buzzwords like plasma, rear projection and LCD are everywhere, and that is before you have chosen from an array of screen sizes, shapes and brands. It's enough to give you a headache ! Here is simple guide to the world of HDTV, so that you can decide for yourself if it's time to buy one. What is HDTV, ? Putting it simply, it's all about minute pixels ! Ever observed how minute text on your PC monitor looks very vivid, but on the TV it looks blurred ? Your T.V and monitor picture is constructed of pixels of colour. Stating it easily, the pixels on the T.V are bigger than those on the monitor, so the image on the monitor appears sharper and can retain more detail. The smaller the pixels, the more detailed the images will appear. That is why HDTV images look amazing. Why are HDTV so costly ? If we liken a normal 'old fashioned' Cathode Ray Tube T.V with a full HDTV, assuming they are the same size then we can see two things... The colour pixels that constitute the picture have to be 9 times smaller on the HDTV. This makes them very expensive to make. Also, you are paying for the price of the R & D of these items. Just like the Sony PS3 they cost a lot of money to develop, but unlike the Sony PS3 the T.V companies can't get some of that money back every time you buy a new video game. So you have to pay more for each TV until these costs are covered, then the prices will come down dramatically. We have already seen this with the lower resolution HDTV.
