Keep It Simple

By: Colleen Davis

Renowned author and aviator Antoine de Saint Exupery is quoted saying, "It seems that perfection is reached not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." It’s a great concept but its one that’s increasingly hard to live by in our modern age of information overload and television doublespeak. Maybe this is why some novice marketers have such difficulty with poster design. By their very nature, posters are simple and direct. They work best when they are bold and unhindered by complex ad pitches. Poster’s don’t have to be difficult, though. With the following tips and Antoine’s sage advice, you’ll be well on your way to a winning poster advertisement.

Like in the earlier quote, instead of starting with a blank slate, its better to start with all your ideas on the table. Start by getting everything down on paper. Brainstorm and bounce your ideas off each other as a sounding board. Once you’ve got a few good ones, start cutting and narrow down to one or two good headlines, images and copy. Once you have the basic elements, get a poster sized piece of paper and play around drawing your poster on the piece of paper, adding all the different sections and headings you would like to cover in your poster as well as the text. When that’s done, invite others to inspect your proof get their opinions. Also, don’t forget to get someone to proofread your text for grammatical and spelling mistakes.

Just make sure you keep the “less is more” golden rule in mind. You’ll likely have five seconds or less to catch (and keep) the attention of your audience. If you’re poster isn’t direct and easy on the eyes, you’ll lose your viewer. Poster’s get cluttered and unfocused when you add irrelevant or unnecessary information to your poster or when you try to cram too many images into your allotted space. To avoid this, cut out any information your audience might already know or any details that aren‘t directly related the purpose of your poster.

The process of poster design is much easier when you start big and pare down to a distilled message and image. If you take Exupery’s words to heart, you’ll undoubtedly strengthen your final ad design. Of course, if you want to make things even simpler, you can always hire a poster printing company to help you with the poster design process and ensure a professional looking result. It couldn’t be simpler than that.
