If you grew up in America, chances are that you spent some of your time as a kid watching old western movies. You may have played cowboys and Indians, romanticized the wild, wild west beyond all repair, and worn your cowboy boots every single day of the week (except to church when your mother would have to threaten you in order to prevent you from putting them on). Even if you grew up as far away from the west as you could possibly be, it is likely that there was at least one or two western apparel items in your closet, not counting your western-themed Halloween costume. So, growing up thinking that western wear and cowboy boots were something worn by the western heroes of the movies, what happens when reality coincides with fantasy? Take a summer working on a ranch out west, for example. It doesn't take long for a teenage boy to discover that all the western apparel he thought was just fashionable was really just sensible clothing. It also doesn't take very long to discover that being a cowboy- a real cowboy, not just a person wearing the right clothes- is a lot of really hard work under all kinds of inhospitable conditions. In fact, being an actual cowboy is pretty far removed from all the glamor that gets put on it in order to create an aura worthy of Hollywood's attention. So, if you're thinking that you might have been fooled completely about this whole "wild, wild west" thing, don't worry- plenty of it is based in truth, the reality is just a bit...dirtier and harder, that's all. Today's ranches are still full of folks who are rocking the western wear because that's what works for them. The reality of it is that while cowboys may still be rocking the heavily creased denim jeans, pointed shirts, hats and boots, that style is also seen just about everywhere else. If you want to wear cowboy boots, you don't need to be on a ranch- you can wear them anywhere and anytime you like. The real cowboys will be glad you aren't trying to actually BE a cowboy, and you probably will too. If you like a little superstition in your life, remember to never set your hat down on the bed, always leave it right-side up and likewise, leave your boots standing upright. Of course, it's all just superstition, so you'll never know if anything will really happen to you if you don't do as you're supposed to...unless you try.
