Little Known Marketing Facts - Not All Vanity Toll-free Numbers Are National

By: Marion Hose

Many of us think that when we see a 1 800 number advertised on the side of a bus in New York we will get the same company on the line if we dial that number when we are in California, that is not true.

The deregulation of the toll-free business started with the break-up of ATT in 1984, since 1993 all toll-free numbers have had to be "portable". This means that they are now not carrier dependent and that any number can now be forwarded to another regular number. The vanity toll-free number business has boomed and now there are toll-free numbers at 888, 877 and 866 along with the traditional 800. This deregulation has allowed many different companies to get into the business and to offer innovative uses and configurations for the toll-free system.

One of the really clever ideas is to have the same toll-free number point to different final destinations. Thus, a number dialed in New York may ring in New york only, or perhaps in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, but not in other states. That same number, when dialed from a phone in California might reach California only, or perhaps California and Nevada.

Websites of vanity phone number providers have information on other services offered by these companies.

An example of this practice is provided by this case study of a personal injury law firm using a vanity toll-free number. The case study mentions that the number 1-800-HURT-NOW is in use by twelve different law firms in ten different states.
